2016 Vision Quest Charter Fishing

Meet the Captain

 Captain Pete

I believe when you hire a skipper, it is good to know with whom you are dealing with and what their background is. After all, you will be stuck with me on a boat for 9 hours.

Your Captain was born in Erie, PA in 1965. I have logged over 30 years of open water trolling experience on Lake Erie, Ontario, Michigan and Huron. I started trolling in Lake Erie in 1980 near the beginning of the highly successful Coho Salmon in Erie, PA and have been trolling around ever since. I have seen the start and end to many things on Lake Erie.

I obtained my captains license in 1987 and started my charter career in 1988. My service did very well after just a couple short years and I was booking 80 to 100 trips per season in just a short time.

Eventually, I decided to take over the family roofing business and operate a part time charter service. However, I had to retire from the charter business as I grew the roofing company from 10 employees to 50 employees and started my family. In 1997, I opted to start another roofing company in New Castle PA which had as many as 40 employees. However, I missed the charter business although I continued to fish during these years.

After taking a few years off from the charter business, I decided to start my business again and sold my New Castle Company. Along the way, I re-committed my life to Jesus Christ, married and found time to have 4 children and a step child. I am very proud of my wife and children. They help keep me on that straight path and they remind me what life is truly about.I am a very competitive person. I love to beat the fish and find it very rewarding to provide my customers a successful and safe day on the water. am or any Captain is. My motto “Leave No Fish Behind” is proof. Vision Quest is one of the most successful fishing operations in on the water today.

I love to fish tournaments and in 2005 I started to fish these more regularly. Success was not fast at first because we often traveled to foreign waters to compete and with little practice time. It was extremely hard to dial in the fish on another Lake. However, Team Vision Quest has compiled an impressive record over the years with over 50 top 10 finishes to date since 2003. Many of these have came since 2005 when I made a commitment to tournament fishing and many more will hopefully follow. This is also a testament to my competitive nature and desire to be successful. In 2007 and 2008, Team V.Q. finished in the top 10 in 22 out of 27 events that we participated in. Not many fishing operations can relate to that kind of success. Since 2006, Team VISION QUEST has placed in the top 10 in over 100 events on the Great Lakes with 25 being either 1st or 2nd place finishes...

I have been associated with several fishing product companies over the years as a member of their Pro-Staff and am involved with lure design. It seems I am always trying to find that “perfect” lure or fishing program. Currently. I am proud to be associated with: Dreamweaver Lures, Big Jon Sports Equipment, A-TOM-MIK Trolling Flies, Deep R Divers, Fish Hawk Electronics, SHARK Cannonballs, SHIMANO Fishing Products, Silver Horde and FishUSA.

I consider myself a well rounded skipper and the most overall experienced Captain in Erie, PA. Why? Because I fish from April to December and do not specialize in one species. I fish every month for all species and have learned much and have gained vast experience over the years. I am currently the only Captain in our area that fishes this type of schedule and can put my customers on fish during any given month.

Currently, I own (3) fishing boats that are well maintained, clean and equipped with professional tackle. I do not skimp when it comes to tackle or equipment. All three boats are made by Tiara. Tiara has the reputation for making the best fishing boats on the Great Lakes and I would have to agree. The Tiara Yacht 3600 Open is the gem of the charter fleet in Erie, PA. I now have a 3100 Tiara Open with hard top on Lake Ontario and I use the 2700 open to travel and fish tournaments sometimes and it is my early/late year rig.

I am also comitted to the fishery : I am the past president and founder of the Erie Pennsylvania Sport Fishing Association, serve on the Lake Erie Percid Management Committee, I represent the State of Pennsylvania as the Pennsylvania Sport Fishing Advisor on the Great Lakes Fishery Commission Commission's Committee of Advisors (that's a mouthful), maintain memberships with several fishing organization's and complete 2-5 fishing seminars per year. I believe that one should give back to the fishery that has been so good to me over the years and have done so by investing knowledge, time and resources to this very fishery.

This brief autobiography should help you know your Captain in a better manner. I look forward to meeting you at the dock.

Captain Pete Alex

Why Vision Quest Sport Fishing Charters?

First, I would like to thank you for taking time to read this and considering Vision Quest as your charter boat choice.
Secondly, let me brief you on our fish catching/customer philosophy. Catching fish is like any other job in life, there are those who excel and those who don’t in their fields. We excel because of a self determination to be the best in our line of work. You get 100% effort when booking with us.

Secondly, we try to see that all customers are comfortable, safe, and enjoy themselves. Once we feel conditions are safe and customers are comfortable, “we go to work” to try to catch them the most fish we can within that given period of time. That is what you, the customer, are paying for.

Thirdly, let me brief you on our credentials. The Vision Quest is owned and operated by myself, a fully insured and licensed captain with over 29 years of Great Lake water experience. I am on the field staff of national tackle manufacturing companies such as , BIG JON Power Sports Equipment, DREAMWEAVER Lures, GAMMA Fishing Lines, Fish Hawk Electronics, Deep R Divers, SHARK Downrigger weights, SHIMANO Fishing Products and A-TOM-MIK Flies. Some of the Quests highlights over the years include trolling up a six man limit of walleyes in two hours (36), boating (138) smallmouth bass in four hours of trolling, landing (2,897) fish in (89) trips, hooking up (90) and landing (65) lake trout on Lake Erie in nine hours, hooking (73) and landing (35) salmon & trout in 6 hours. Team Vision Quest has also won and placed in numerous Great Lakes Fishing Tournaments in Pennsylvania, New York and Canada. TEAM VQ's tournament accomplishments are well respected on Lake Erie and Ontario. Since 2006, we have placed in the top 10 over 100 times which is a PROVEN testament to our level of competitiveness and skill.
Thanks again for considering Vision Quest charters, hope to hear from you…---Captain Pete Alex

Booking That Charter

Before deciding on that preferred date, keep two things in mind. The first thing is that weekends are the preferred – the first to go dates and of course, limited. Secondly, each specie has a particular time when the fishing is better. With this in mind, one should book a charter in advance, a year is not too far.
When choosing a date, a deposit of $150.00 will reserve this date. This deposit is refundable upon bad weather or an extreme circumstance. A two week cancellation notice is the least notice that is accepted unless of course the weather is bad.
You will be responsible for bringing the proper clothing, footwear, food, beverage, etc. Upon request, food and beverage can be provided at a reasonable cost along with taxidermy service and videotaping.
If tournament fishing excites you, there are limited days available for these events. The Vision Quest visits several different Ports over the season to compete in salmon & trout tournaments. Call Captain Pete for more details if interested.

What to expect with your adventure:

Hard work, professional mates and results.
The catch will be cleaned and bagged
You will be treated courteously and with respect
We encourage your participation with us

Buoy - Lake Erie

Lake Erie Buoy

Boaters, scientists, and weather forecasters now have more Great Lakes coastal information at their fingertips. The Regional Science Consortium, a collaborative, non-profit organization that focuses on coordinated educational and research projects for Lake Erie and the upper Ohio River Basin, deployed a new buoy on Lake Erie in May 2014. The buoy will provide information about the lake's wind and wave conditions, as well as water temperature. NOAA's Coastal Storms Program (CSP) funded the purchase of the buoy in partnership with the Great Lakes Observing System (GLOS), a region of the NOAA-led U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS®).

Past fishing Reports and summaries:

Check us out on our Vision Quest Sport Fishing Facebook page for constant fishing report updates. We will provide a year end summary on this page at some point in 2016 !

2016 Summary:

Another solid year for us on the tournament trail (see tourney report) and charter fishing ! We averaged over 20 fish a trip again throughout the year with many big box days.

We had several hilites including a year end Lake Trout trip which resulted in boating 82 Lake Trout and 3 Steelheaad and hooking well over 100. WOW-beat that one ! We started the year winnning the first tourney and ended the year by winning the TROUT CUP overall championship. We also landed 30 steelhead on one day during the small Offshore Steelhead Tourney. An impressive feat here and that huge day one helped us sew up that weekend event. I love to target Steelies.....

Our walleye season was more of a challenge in 2016', many guys struggled but we remained very consistent with our catches and often went with the GUT and NOT the "Fleet"... Most times that paid dividends for my crew!

One other feat was landing 40 plus salmon on LAKE ERE during 2016. The bulk were Pink Salmon, a rare fish. But we did have a King and Coho or two. WOW, I never saw that many Pinks before in our waters and we had a day in which we boated (9) Pinks out of about 14 we hooked that day. That was another boat and probbaly Lake record?

God is good !

2015 Summary:

Another good year of fishing for us!!! We started out on Erie with a so-so steelhead/brown trout bite but had an exceptional Lake Trout bite! Our tourney season started strong also in 2015.

Our walleye fishing started slow when we came back from Lake O. but became steady for us. We averaged 24-26 fish per trip on Erie (walleyes and steelhead combined). A lot of guys struggled out of Erie this season but we were very consistent and had many great days. We concluded our year with very good steelhead and laker fishing !

We pulled the boats early in 2015 and did not fish our November season because of a very busy roofing season and some great weather.

On Lake Ontario, every charter was successful and we caught lots of fish for our customers. The few TOUGH days we encouneterd were typically found on tournament days-when else. LOL This past season on Lake O was one of our most consistent for putting many fish in the box for our customers despite a tough year overall for many on Lake O. Our day to day efforts and fish catching desire kept many anglers on the VQ happy. Our last trips in late September were very good as we drove far offshore to chase 2-3 year old kings and steelhead. All trips were rewareded with nice catches! A great way to wrap up the season out of Wilson, NY.

If you check our tourney report, you will see that our consistent year also reflected our tourney season and accomplishments. We had a pile of top 10 finishes and only 3 non top 10 finishes. We compiled our best earning year to date-nearly $60,000. Again, with most of those in foreign ports as we traveled from place to place with a minor amount of pre-fishing time. It could have been better tho.. We finished just shy of the Lake O. overall tourney record. What "one" more fish could have done for us.... Team Screamer's record will have to remain a little longer :)

To all of my team mates and customers...Thank You again !!!!

2014 Summary:

Wow, what a year we had. We experienced a fun, exciting and rewarding tournament season and caught limits of fish on nearly every charter outing from start to finish and on both Lake Erie and Ontario.

Our walleye season was nothing short of spectacular as we averaged about 30 fish per trip with limits on nearly every trip off the dock. Our trout season on Erie was also very good with limits on every charter except one. The same can be said with the Lake Ontario trips while salmon and trout fishing. Capt. Pete said despite inconsistent King fishing, fishing for coho, browns, steelhead and lakers more than filled any gaps that existed with Kings. When the Kings werent available, those other species more than filled in. Despite a so so King fishery, we still caught lots of Sharks once they arrived in May.

Our tournament season was also good with (13) top "7" finishes in the 17 events participated in ! Many of those in foreign waters and Ports accross Lake Ontario :)

Thank You to all of my customers in 2014 you are the best !!!!!

October 19th 2014

Team Vision Quest takes 3rd place in the Fall Trout Challenge to help them win the 2014 EPSFA Team of The Year !

They are the only Team to be a two time or more winner in the 5 years this event has been held.

Captain Pete said his team fished hard and their strategy was to try to target brown trout again this year since that plan helped them win the 2013 event. They finished just short and missed a few key bites in this grind event. We will get them next year he commented !

August 2-3, 2014

Team Vision Quest, captained by Pete Alex, came from 3rd place after day one  with a day two MONSTER box of walleyes to capture 1st place in the 9th annual EPSFA SUMMER SLAM.  It was the Team’s fourth 1st place tournament win in the last 10 tournament’s fished.  Their best 12 fish on day 2 averaged just shy of 8 pounds each and scored a 93.5# weight.

July 19-20, 2014

Team Vision Quest traveled 4 hours from Erie to take second place in the Sodus Point, NY Pro-Am Tournament this weekend. 27 pro teams participated.

Pete says: "We Love this town and the BT fishing here"

June 21, 2014

Team Vision Quest takes 3rd place in the EPSFA Walleye Challenge using an all kids team again!!
The kids: Noah, Maya, Colton Alex and Karle Jones (Petes 1st mates daughter) reeled in all 36 walleyes and 1 steelhead on the day.

Captain Pete: remarked “These kids were awesome today ”

Walleye Challenge 2014

May 24-25, 2014

Team VQ prticipates in the Niagara County Pro Am and sweeps the entire event. (That DON'T happen too often) They took 1st place in the Classic Division (best 12 fish box), 1st in the Trophy Div. (Best 5 fish box) and took the largest fish overall, a 24.8# King over the 2 day event !!.

Team VQ thanks DREAMWEAVER Lures and A-TOM-MIK Flies for much of the success they had that weekend.

April 26-27, 2014

Team VQ travels from Erie, PA to fish the Spring King of The Lake event held in St. Catherines; ONT.

Pete loves this event and every year the fishing and strategy is different. We had two great days of fishing, esp. on day one where we took over 60 bites.

They finished 5th overall.

December, 2013

Well, I was not very diligent in keeping this section updated. LOL, nice try and thought tho. Maybe in 2014 I can keep this section updated (will try again)

However, here is a summary.... Hold on..

Lake Erie April-was tough fishing in the Erie area again for steelies and browns. However, the always Laker fishing was steady. And we took our biggest walleye EVER while Laker fishing in May. It weighed just over 13# and came off a Dreamweaver spoon pulled behind Stealth Core. Off to Lake Ontario at April months end to salmon fish and enter the first tourney of the year. (check back this month for an updated tourney report at the tourney report "button")

Fishing in Lake Ontario was very good from April end until we brought the big ship home at mid June. We took many limits of fish for our charters and most days were greeted with full coolers and happy anglers. We saved all the tough bite days for the tournaments. LOL

When we arrived, walleye fishing was just heating up and our first walleye trip was a success. In fact, just about every walleye trip was successful. Results were good to awesome as limits and limits of Eyes came aboard the VQ5 and VQ 4. Our great walleye fishing lasted into the 1st week of October.

Steelies were inconsistent as usual. LOL.. They are nomads, here today, gone tomorrow and are flat our unreliable ! They came and visited us throughout the summer when they wanted to. Then they would leave.. Fortunately, I did not have charters that wanted steelhead specifically, so they were always a welcomed bonus but when they were around, we took the bat to them and used them to help fill the BOX as one would say.

Brown trout came around this Fall and just in time to help us win our Fall Trout Challenge tournament in convincing fashion (for the 2nd time in 6 years). We dialed into the Bts this fall and took 40 browns in October and early November. Most ever for us and with the ever growing BT program, we will look to capitalize on this new and upcoming fishery in the future. Also, as of this date (December 16th, 2013-we have landed over 40 out of the Tributaries. Biggest was just under 13#.

Lakers: great fishing this spring and limited fishing this fall due to BRUTAL and unending winds. Our last trip on November 22nd, we ventured into dirty water, froze our butts off but took a 6 man limit of Lakers, 3 steelies and 7 Smallmouth Bass. It was worth every frozen moment for Jim and his crew !

In sumary, our fishing trips yielded a LOT of fish all year. many limts of walleye, lakers and salmon/trout found their way to the WHITE COFFIN. Our summer average on Lake Erie was between 24-30 fish per trip while usually hooking 35-40 fish. Our Lake Ontario average was 15 fish, often hooking 20-25 per outing.

Our tournament season was so-so but TEAM VQ did take (4) 1st placements this year with a slew of top 10 placements. We were not close to our 2012 season in which we cashed $46,000 in tourney earnings, however, I remember the saying-"You can't win them all but you sure can try to" . I will update our tourney report section later this month (December) or as soon as I can remember to. LOL :)

For those returning customers, you saw once again that we work hard to put fish in the boat for you and for those new customers, we proved it !

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all, God Bless...

Captain Pete Alex
